Voice answers and the microphone

How the app hears answers, which browsers work, and what to try when it can't hear your kid.

Kids answer out loud. The app listens, turns the words into text, and checks them against the answer key.

How a voice answer works

  1. The app reads the question out loud.
  2. When the microphone circle appears, your kid says the answer.
  3. The app stops listening after about 2 seconds of quiet (a little longer on quotations), or after 30 seconds. Your kid can tap I'm done or press the space bar to finish sooner.
  4. The app shows what it heard, whether it was right, and the answer.

For most questions, the answer counts "in essence": the same meaning, not the exact words. Names that are a little mispronounced are fine. Quotation answers must be word-perfect.

Unsure means try again

Sometimes the app can't tell what your kid said. Then it says "I didn't quite catch that. Say it again!" and listens once more. If it still can't tell, it says "This one doesn't count" and shows the answer.

An unsure answer is never marked wrong. It doesn't change your kid's progress at all.

Which browsers work

  • Works: Chrome or Edge on computers, Chromebooks, and Android tablets. Safari on iPads, iPhones, and Macs.
  • Doesn't work yet: Firefox and some other browsers. The practice screen says "This browser can't listen yet." Open jbq.games in Chrome, Edge, or Safari instead.

Voice answers need an internet connection.

If the app can't hear your kid

Work down this list:

  1. Allow the microphone. The first time, the browser asks to use the microphone. Tap Allow. If you tapped Block, change it in the browser's site settings for jbq.games (in Chrome, tap the icon next to the web address).
  2. On an iPad or iPhone, use Safari. Check that Safari may use the microphone in Settings. If it still can't hear, turn on Enable Dictation in Settings > General > Keyboard.
  3. Close other apps that might be using the microphone, like video calls.
  4. Find a quiet room. TV, music, and siblings talking make the app unsure.
  5. Speak up, close to the device. A normal speaking voice, not a whisper.
  6. Reload the page, or close the browser tab and open it again.

If it says "I didn't hear anything" every time, it's almost always the microphone permission.

What we keep

jbq.games doesn't save recordings of your kid's voice. It keeps the text the app heard as part of each answer's record.
